Book Review: The art of fiction by David Lodge (Penguin) - Part 14

39 - Irony
In rhetoric, irony consists of saying the opposite of what you mean, or inviting an interpretation different from the surface meaning of your words. An ironic statement is recognized as such in the act of interpretation.

    -Situational irony: When you expect one thing, but get the opposite.

    -Verbal irony: When someone says Something,ut truly means the opposite.

    -Dramatic irony: When the audience seems to know more about an event, a situation or a conversation than the characters in the movie, on the show or in the book.

    The three types of irony are :

    -situationnal irony : when we expect something but get the opposite
    -verbal irony : someone says something but means the opposite
    -dramatic irony : when the audience seem to know more about an event, situation or conversation than the audience

    The three types of irony are:
    - the verbal irony : what is said is the opposite of what is meant;
    -the situational irony : what happens is different or even opposite of what we expected
    -and finally the dramatic irony, when we know something that the character doesn't know

  5. Hello miss,the three types of Irony are:

    - Situational irony: What happens is different than what is expected.
    ex: A police station gets robbed.

    - Verbal irony: What is said is different from what is meant.
    ex: When a character says " what a nice weather" while it's raining.

    - Dramatic irony: Knowing something that a character does not know.
    ex: Character in a horror movie wants to enter a room while the killer is in it.

    There are three main types of irony which are :

    *Verbal irony : When what is said is different, sometimes even opposite from what is meant

    *Situational irony : When what happens is different, sometimes even opposite from what is expected

    *Dramatic irony : When the reader knows something that the character does not
