Grandpa’s
Short Stories by Roger Williams is an adorable collection of illustrated short
stories for children, which was beautifully illustrated by Barbara Owczarek. The
book follows Willie and his friends as they embark on various adventures, from
hiking (and meeting snakes and other animals) and fishing to taking care of
pets and learning about responsibility. The protagonist, Willie, is a lively,
well-mannered boy who loves to help but who also gets into trouble! Grandpa's
Short Stories is a book that will help parents instill important values and
life lessons in their children.
The
drawings perfectly complement the texts and help make them memorable and
impactful. As a parent and as a teacher, I loved every story. They are all
packed with common sense, love, friendship, and goodness and point out that we
are all fallible! Even our little hero can get into mischief! The stories are
written in a simple and easy-to-understand language, making it ideal for
children who are just starting to read on their own. One of the strengths of the book is its
ability to teach valuable life lessons in a fun and engaging way. Each story
has a clear message that is conveyed through the adventures that Willie and his
friends experience. For example, in “Willie Raises a Puppy”, Willie learns the
importance of being responsible when he takes care of his dog, even if, at
first, he is not that responsible, as he accepts the gift of a puppy without
asking his parents first.
